The story of, A Special Love, began to form in my mind when I was lucky enough in life, to stumble upon a job at a school for special needs students. While working there I spent my days laughing, smiling, and crying too. I fell in love with not only the students but their families as well. I recently left my position after having a baby, to be a stay-at-home mom. At that time, a family member began publishing and inspired my decision to actually start writing. I had always wanted to focus on young adult/teen stories, and missing the students I had grown so attached to, I continued to develop the story of a family with an autistic son, and their relationships.
In my time working with special needs students I was often a witness to the struggles they faced and that of their families. Every parent can’t help but have expectations of what their child’s life will be. A parent’s love adapts, grows, and transitions with their child. In this story the family begins to fall apart. When you are the sister, brother, mother, father, or friend to a special needs child or adult, you are often many things; a caretaker, interpreter, advocate, janitor, nurse, detective. But, those roles always come second to your primary relationship as a sister, brother, mother, father, or friend. I was amazed to see that while the families I encountered faced numerous struggles, they were most often met with smiles, selflessness, and strength.
This novel, is a love letter to any family facing trials and tribulations, with a reminder that while it is easy to focus on the hardships of life, the gift of acceptance and love is what it is really all about. The joy, hard work, and sacrifice that I was able to experience in my career were a true testament to the meaning of family and an illustration that every person is unique, gifted, and one of a kind. As I worked with our special needs and particularly autistic students, it became clear to me that it wasn’t always about their accomplishments, but often their journey to get there. This story is the depiction of one family and I only hope that others will be able to relate.

Larissa Ione does not disappoint with this second installment in the MoonBound Clan Vampire series! It was everything I had hoped it would be plus more! If you missed my review of the first book of the series, you can find it here

When I first read the synopsis to this installment, I was stoked. I really couldn't wait to get my hands on more of Hunter. I wanted to learn more about him & see more insight into his life as Clan Chief. I definitely wasn't disappointed. Ione continues this novel within the world she built revolving around the Vampire Clans, who have stories of their origination as vampires. Again, the Native American spin on the original vampires is one of my favorite things about this novel. It's a different, more specific spin on vampires.

The characters! Oh my gracious, I love these characters. Even the bad guys - they're GREAT antagonists. They're pure evil and you love to hate them. Ailyn... I loved her in the first novel and I really, really loved her in this novel. She is such a strong, brave woman. From her very birth, she's been slighted because she was born with a malformed leg. The only thing that has saved her from being drown... she was a twin and the order of their birth was a traditional aspect of their life. She lived in hell. There's no other way for me to put it. Pure hell. But she still held her head high, her back strong, played the role she was handed when she had to, and held onto her dreams of one day being free.

Her sister... not so much. She was the perfect daughter. The one who grew up and agreed with everything her father told her to. Grrrrr.... I wanted to smack her so many times that I eventually just stopped counting. I felt horrible for Hunter because he was supposed to mate that wench!

We do see Nicole & Riker more in this novel, along with the others from book 1. I'm so glad that Ione is continuing on with this world & set of characters. I find myself wondering what's going to happen next & who will be the stars in the next novel. I have an idea that it'll be Myne. I'm crossing my fingers! I can't wait to dive more into him!

The demon realm which Hunter & Ailyn traveled into was amazingly crafted. Every aspect of that quest had me flipping pages as fast as possible. They grew closer & we really saw how much determination Ailyn possessed. She was amazing!

Overall, this was an amazing second installment into a wonderfully crafted series by Ione - it continued to prove why she's, by far, one of my favorite authors. It was everything I had hoped for and more! I can't wait to see where Ione takes this story next!

Overall rating: 5 Huge Stars
Cover: 5 Stars
Characters: 5 Stars
Plot: 5 Stars
Climax: 5 Stars! The twist on Ailyn's power was brilliant!
Ending: 5 Stars

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand.
“Why?” I asked.
There was a beat. “Why what?”
Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.
A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.
But then he moved.
Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”
“But—”
“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.
“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.
His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.”
I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed.
Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.
Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?
“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter.
“Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.”
He chuckled.
I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.
I felt cared for . . . cherished.
Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

Review: Awakening Foster Kelly by Cara Rosalie Olsen @CaraR_Olsen

Awakening Foster Kelly
by Cara Rosalie Olsen
YA Contemporary Romance / Fiction
Published June 26, 2013

*Ebook obtained directly from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Synopsis via Goodreads:

If only a pile of wayward curls and the inability to stay on her feet were seventeen year-old Foster Kelly’s most pressing concerns. Unfortunately, stubborn hair and clumsiness is just the tip of it. It was only a mistake, but when at the age of five Foster is told “You don’t belong here” the result is one broken heart. These four carelessly spoken words have shaped and shadowed Foster, and now—a senior at Shorecliffs High School—she seeks the wallflower’s existence, denying herself the most casual of friendships, much too afraid that someone will see what Foster believes is certain: she does not belong anywhere – or with anyone. This reality would continue to suit her just fine, however . . .

Love has a long-standing history of undoing broken hearts.

Like a comet, an unexpected arrival knocks Foster out of the crowded, starry sky, sending her directly into the limelight. Exposed and afraid, she will attempt to regain anonymity; but it isn’t so easy now that someone is watching. He pursues this shy enigma, confronting Foster’s deepest fears head-on, and in the process falls wholly and completely in love with her. But there is something he is not saying; a secret capable of certain ruin. There are two probable outcomes: either he will break her heart once and for all, or he will heal it.

In the end, though, it is Foster who must decide if she is worth mending.

CARA ROSALIE OLSEN resides in sunny Southern California, where she lives with her very patient husband, Michael, and their spoiled pooch, Annabella. A product of a relatively normal childhood - whatever that means - Olsen recalls "Life had this relentlessly boorish way of reminding me I was wonky and unapproved. Regardless of status or gene pool, there is nothing simple or easy about growing up. Life doesn't play favorites or carry biases; it's the pits for everyone. But rather than constantly falling into the pit, often I chose to climb down willingly, lining the bottom with a soft place to land. That place is where I became a reader, and today, a writer."

Throughout high school Olsen struggled with subjects Math and Science, but excelled at the arts, written and performed, often finding a kindred spirit in those teaching Creative Writing and English Literature. What began with an ardency for language soon developed into a burgeoning desire to create. This yearning took shape in the form of poetry and short story fiction, both of which have been featured in print and online publications. Olsen's debut novel, Awakening Foster Kelly is the result of a four-year project born on a whim and sustained by its characters' tenacity and their refusal to give the author a minute to herself. "In the beginning, getting them to talk was like trying to light a wet match. So, we had several long, sometimes combative conversations. I told them that unless they started holding up their end of the deal, I would have no choice but to fill in the blanks with whatever scraps came to mind. It wasn't very long before I started showing up to find that everyone was already seated and waiting for me. We talked. I drank coffee. It was bliss."

These days Olsen considers herself incredibly blessed to be able to do what she loves most. However . . . if she wasn’t a full-time writer, she would have liked to join the cast of Saturday Night Live, or, taken over as CEO of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

It's taken me quite a while to get through AFK. The reasons for that were unrelated to the novel itself and due to more personal life situations. That's a story for another day. During that time, I read AFK off and on. It's been sort of a relaxation tool for me. Ha. Cara's writing is very fluid. It flows so well that I sort of just melted into it. Now I'm not saying the novel was boring or put me to sleep. I'm merely talking about the actual prose in the novel. It's so smooth that it merely brought me out of whatever funk I was in. With that said, there were pieces of the story that I felt could've been sort of discussed in a shorter, less descriptive way. This novel wasn't one that over-described every little thing - I can't stand that - but it did have a few parts here and there that I had to sort of breeze through because I had already painted the picture in my mind before the author had to describe it all to me.

The characters: I really enjoyed Foster. She was very introverted and socially awkward. She tries her hardest to just blend in and never be noticed. Her parents - oh, how I enjoyed their quirkiness. Especially when her father turned his skin a different color by accident & her mother teased him about it. It was odd to see such curious and good-natured parents when you already know how awkward and shy Foster is. They brought a bit of lightness to her character where there was otherwise a sort of dull shadow on top of her.

The male lead - Dominic... I wasn't really sure if I liked him.  He definitely didn't get a warm welcome from me when we first started to meet him & learn about him. As the story went on, I sort of warmed up to him... and then he would do something sort of asshatish and I would be back on the fence. Foster, however, seemed to need the tough kick he sort of brought her I think. Eh. Anyway.

The supporting characters, the twins especially, were fun. They brought more spunk into the novel.

The plot... It was catching. I honestly thought there would be more overall focus on this big senior project that Foster was so worried about. It ended up sort of being a plot point that stayed in the background and didn't really make a huge climactic situation like I had assumed it would. There were several little plot twists here and there which I needed but the ending.... I was blind-sided. I can imagine that some readers won't like this ending. They'll probably think it was a cop-out ending. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. I actually liked this ending in this situation. I will say that I think this novel could be shortened and still have the impact that it does. It was really, really long. It felt long at certain times. It helped that I read it in bits and pieces over such a long period of time. I sort of had a good pace going on. But I definitely couldn't sit and read this in a few long sittings.

So overall... I'm going to be giving this one a 4 stars.

Cover Rating - I'm not loving the cover. It doesn't connect with the story. It's an awesome graphic but if I would've seen it in the store, I would've breezed right on by.
